As the winter period approaches, it’s essential to know how to protect your work boots properly. Adequate protection and good maintenance will not only increase the chances of keeping your feet dry, but will lengthen the useful life of your boots. When your work boots are exposed to winter conditions, you must make sure to follow some essential steps – daily cleaning, waxing and/or addition of a specialized protector.
Every day, when you get home from work, you ideally should wipe your boots with a wet cloth to remove the calcium buildup. If the leather is severely whitened, a solution of 50% vinegar and 50% water can help dislodge the most stubborn dirt. You must also make sure to protect and hydrate the leather to prevent it from drying and cracking or deteriorating gradually.
To obtain better results, it is important to choose a product adapted to your specific ROYER model. For example, for full-grain leather, like model 5701GT, grease or wax can be applied with a cloth or in spray form. For nubuck, used on model 2350GSP, it is recommended to use a spray solution, specially designed for this type of suede. For SHIELDTEX™ fabric, present on several ROYER models, including 10-8620, daily cleaning and fortification with an “all-purpose” shoe protector will do.
Most of the time, these products are available from your ROYER dealers, from cobblers or in specialty shoe stores, in the form of “kits” that include everything you need. During application, you must ensure that the solution is spread over the entire surface of the boot, including the stitches and the junction between the upper and the sole. It is also recommended to remove the laces to apply the product properly to the tongue.
One last tip: After the work day, if your boots are wet inside, it is important not to dry them near an electric baseboard or a space heater. This heat is too intense and risks contributing to accelerated cracking of the leather. Drying in the ambient air, with the insoles removed, is preferable.
This winter, don’t forget that the secret to a longer life for your boots is the diligence of your maintenance.
