What Are the Metatarsals?
The metatarsals are the five long bones on the top of the foot that connect the rear part of the foot to the heel. These bones, known as metatarsals, are very small and have minimal protection from skin, fat, or muscle, making them highly fragile and vulnerable to injuries from falling heavy objects, crushing, or violent impacts.
Why Choose a Boot with Metatarsal Protection?
Several users can benefit from the advantages of choosing a work boot with metatarsal protection. Whether in foundries, welding, forestry, or construction, many professions constantly put workers' feet at risk.
If the job involves lifting or rolling heavy objects, handling sharp or pointed materials, or operating machines or tools that could cause injuries, then a work boot with metatarsal protection is ideal. In the event of an impact, the protector's shell will absorb and distribute the shock energy, greatly reducing the risk of fractures or severe injuries. With well-protected feet, workers can focus on their tasks without worrying about their safety.
Moreover, a metatarsal injury is often disabling and takes a long time to heal, which can lead to workers missing several days or even weeks of work.
What Types of Metatarsal Protection Does ROYER Offer?
External Protection: External metatarsal protection is typically made from durable materials such as hard plastic, metal, or composite. The protective flap is located outside the boot over the laces. External protectors often tend to make the boot stiffer and less comfortable. However, at ROYER, we have developed our own model of external metatarsal protector, the REALFLEX™. This technology maintains the natural flex of the boot during walking and when working in a squatting or kneeling position, unlike some other models from competitors.
Internal Protection: Often designed with softer materials than external protection, internal protection also has the advantage of being concealed inside the boot for a more discreet look. Internal metatarsal protectors provide the same protection in the event of direct impacts but are less effective in slow compression incidents. At ROYER, we are very proud of our INTERGUARD® technology. After five years of research and development, the 2.0 edition of the INTERGUARD® internal protector has recently been introduced. This enhanced version offers superior metatarsal protection without compromising comfort and ease of use. Its arrival on the market further strengthens ROYER®'s position as a global leader in metatarsal protection.
One thing is certain: workplace safety should never be overlooked, and it is essential that workers, regardless of their field, wear appropriate work boots. Like any personal protective equipment, the work environment and associated risks should be carefully assessed to determine if metatarsal protection is necessary. When in doubt, it is better to be overprotected than under protected!
